Since I spent most of yesterday fishing, I thought it would be a good idea to have a little less “Play time” today and do some work. While working this morning, my friend sent me a text and told me he had been catching some sucker fish. Normally, I don’t get too excited about fishing for suckers but I could tell from the picture that they were spawning. When sucker fish spawn they actually look pretty neat. They get really solid, dark stripe down their lateral line and their colors pop out much more than normal. More importantly, I know that big trout like to follow spawning suckers and munch on their eggs as they float by. I arrived at the river a little after 5:00 PM and noticed the spawning suckers everywhere. I started casting an egg pattern in hopes of hooking into a nice trout. Around 5:30 PM I hooked into my first fish and brought in a good sized cutthroat.
I continued fishing the same stretch of river for the next hour and picked up one more cutthroat. I decided to head upriver and try a new spot I checked out a couple days ago. The first spot I wanted to try was taken by a couple of people fishing already so I headed up above them. I ended up pulling out a little whitefish pretty quickly.
I kept fishing and picked up another cutt and a couple more whitefish. It started getting cold and dark so I decided it was time to call it a day. Im headed back up to the Henry’s Fork tomorrow with Kyle and am looking forward to a great day of fishing.
